BANQUET

Banquet promo pic

The once fruitful rock ‘n’ roll city of San Francisco is now a barren womb, fraught with the lasting effects of technological herpes. Thankfully a polyp known as Banquet has formed and is screeching for freedom from the womb’s clutches. With dual ripping lead guitars, howling vocals and a rhythm section that can make a pregnant woman’s water break, Banquet are raising the flag for San Francisco Rock n’ Roll. Their debut 7″ will be available on Who Can You Trust? Records alongside local rippers Hot Lunch, Glitter Wizard, Wild Eyes, Lecherous Gaze and Planes of Satori. Keep your ears peeled for that violent scramble ripping through your airwaves known as Banquet and don’t miss out when they shred in a town near you.”

Including members of Buffalo Tooth and Poor Sons.

PASTOR

pastor-promo_01sw

Pastor started jamming in late 2012. The group consists of four young men with an intense love to the art of music. Their various influences can be drawn from your dad’s record collection (well, if he was actively listening from 1968 to 1978). The tunes are filled with fine riffs, spaced out solos and hard hitting rhythm sections. Yet Pastor tries to break through the niche and clichés by mixing the sound with a bands unique character.

PLANES OF SATORI

PLANES OF SATORI promo

“It’s not rare to find modern day bands inspired by that golden era of late 1960s and early 1970s Krautrock luminaries. Cosmopolitan cities like San Francisco and Brooklyn are rife with musicians tangled in the patch cords of yesteryear’s analog synth wizardry. There was even a time in the early 2000s when it was common to stumble upon a group of young, hip, ding-dongs decked out in red shirts and black ties, a-la Kraftwerk’s 1978 opus The Man-Machine.

Oakland, California quartet Planes Of Satori is not one of those bands. Sure, they’re largely informed by the rhythmic repetitions and mechanical mantras of what was happening in Germany during the late 1960s. But listen to their impressive debut album for Who Can You Trust? Records and you’ll understand why the band refers to their sound as “psychedelic Afro-Kraut”. They’re also equally steeped in the soulful grooves of Ethiopian jazz as well as the Zambian psych-punk of bands like Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou Dahomey and Witch (We Intend To Cause Havoc).

Not since Can’s Damo Suzuki has a frontman sounded as dangerously unpredictable as Alejandro Magaña. Raze Regal is one of those guitar players whose skills are so otherworldly; he’s always getting sweated by local musicians to join more bands. At its foundation, Planes Of Satori boast a well-oiled rhythm section so equally tight and loose, they could very well lure Ginger Baker out of his misanthropic kingdom.”

HOT LUNCH

Hot Lunch By Marcell Turner

“Anyone familiar with the heavy, hard-driving punk ‘n’ roll of San Francisco’s HOT LUNCH will tell you that they took too long to release their debut album. But the Lunch lads prefer to do things the old fashioned way – they funded it by saving the money made from playing shows. They also wanted to work with Tim Green of Louder Studios, who could capture the ass-kicking, face-punching, mouth-slapping intensity of their live performances onto an analogue two-inch tape medium for a classic sounding fidelity.

It seemed like a no-brainer to release their eponymous LP on Who Can You Trust? Records out of Germany – home to bands like Lecherous Gaze, Witch and White Hills. The label was so impressed with HOT LUNCH’s drive to piss off old folks and ruin people’s hearing, that they made this release their catalogue’s first ever full-length album.

The band is happy. Guitarist Aaron Nudelman (Mensclub), singer Eric Shea (Parchman Farm), bassist Charlie Karr (Harold Ray Live In Concert) and drummer Rob Alper (SLA) never wanted anything from music but to press vinyl that would sit comfortably in their record collections alongside such influences as Grand Funk Railroad, Black Flag, UFO, Rush, BL’AST!, Ace Frehley, Coloured Balls, Dead Kennedys and Hawkwind.

With a deep love for skateboarding, the HOT LUNCH dudes don’t take for granted that they get to regularly play with other bands redefining skate-rock. They are thankful to call Lecherous Gaze, Earthless, Hightower, The Shrine, Pins Of Light, Glitter Wizard, Carlton Melton and Drunk Horse their friends. But instead of trying to impress you by dropping the names of the more popular acts they’ve played with, the guys in HOT LUNCH would prefer to brag about the time they rocked on the deep-end decks of the pool where the Tim Brauch Memorial Skateboard Contest was held. Or when they played the after-party for the Nevada City premier of Stacy Peralta’s Bones Brigade documentary. Or that Thrasher Magazine leaked a couple of these tunes to soundtrack their King Of The Road video before inviting the band to play a party at Double Rock, their private skatepark.

All this aside, the band would much rather have you listen to their music than read about it. So with that in mind, thank you for your time and enjoy the heavy jams of HOT LUNCH’s self-titled debut album on Who Can You Trust? Records.”

ZIG ZAGS

ZigZags_PhotoByChrisMartin

“Since their inception two years ago ZIG ZAGS have released three singles, played dozens of shows ranging from house parties to the Filmore West and collaborated with Iggy Pop on a cover of Betty Davis’ funk monster “If I’m in Luck I might get picked up” (for Light In The Attic Records). Their most recent releases include a cassette tape entitled “10-12” via the hard working and hard smoking dudes at Burger Records, as well as a split 7” with local shred heads The Shrine (on Volcom Entertainment) that got released for Record Store Day.

This release marks ZIG ZAGS’ debut in Europe and is a collection of both A-sides of the band’s first two US 7” releases that sold out in a very short time. They never made it out of the country in big numbers and were mostly sold at shows of the band. With completely new artwork and packaging by the demented artist Butt Coffin, this should be a treasure even for people in the US who already got their hands on one of the earlier releases.”

WILD EYES S.F.

wild_eyes_promo

“Disaster! Blue Cheer kidnaps Tina Turner and ties her to the tracks of the Grand Funk Railroad. The WILD EYES express bears down from San Francisco, wheels churning. In the tender, drummer Ben Richardson and bassist Carson Binks (Saviours) fuel the engine with syncopated clatter and incendiary rumble. Whirling riffs and searing, psychedelic solos by guitarist Chris Corona (Floating Goat, Hazzard’s Cure) soar from the smokestack. Just before the crash, a soulful siren: singer Janiece Gonzalez, whose warning comes too late. Carnage! Then, from the wreckage – twisted metal, pulverized rock, burning soul – comes “Get Into It!” a new album on Who Can You Trust? Records. Celebration! The WILD EYES express thunders on!”

ORANGE SUNSHINE

orange_sunshine

“ORANGE SUNSHINE: catching the very soul of motorblues and psychedelic garage, that grand, yet darkest era of the acid-drenched fuzz rock from the latest 60′s and the earliest 70′s! Once concocted in a squat in The Hague late ’98 as a traditional power trio blues band to play a mix of covers, traditionals and originals, yet in a rather explosive way, perhaps even quite the same way intense, with quite the same sound raw and same volume high as the much inspiring hardrockin’ proto-punks of Blue Cheer, MC5 and Stack Waddy once managed to perform in the silver age of rock, rendering (or should we say screaming out?) the very same pain once battled with the very same drugs of war, with LSD, with opiates, with speed, to fight the very same tension, the very same grand, yet darkest lost soul victorious…”

KATLA

katla

“This 4 piece from Gothenburg draw heavily from the heavy psych rock from the late 60’s and early 70’s and have an unnerving ability to replicate those sounds with pinpoint accuracy. The KATLA sound on this release is at once stripped down yet expansive thanks to a lively, heavily reverb drenched production. Of the two tracks on offer here, the A side “I Will Hunt You” is the more direct and hard hitting. Don’t be fooled into thinking that KATLA follow their fellow countrymen bands such us Graveyard and Witchcraft into the realms of proto metal. No, KATLA are a far more esoteric proposition as psychedelia features heavily in their raw blues sound and the exquisite vocals of Lisa soar over the band with a power and passion that evokes Grace Slick at her finest. “I Will Hunt You” belies its pastoral opening by driving along on a sinister tribal drum figure over layed with some biting yet spacey lead guitar with an arrangement that builds the tension then drops it back again only to build once more.

On the B side “Foaming Waters” is a far more sedate affair. Less overtly psychedelic than “I Will Hunt You” and more traditional in its verse/chorus structure but no less indebted to the sounds of a halcyon era. Again Lisa shows great depth in her vocals and the guitar is tasteful and restrained here. When a violin appears to take the solo it’s a welcome surprise as it seems to force the band to pull themselves back and gives them room to build the song once more into a splendid guitar solo.

Over the space of two tracks Katla have managed to evoke more moods and cover more musical territory than a lot of bands manage over the course of an Album… something which must surely follow. Turn down the lights, stick on the lava lamp, light the incense and enjoy this all too brief but fantastic piece of plastic.”

LECHEROUS GAZE

“Like the prow of a mighty ship cutting through a sea of turd, LECHEROUS GAZE carry on the legacy of bands like the MC5 and Black Flag to bring dangerously heavy rock back to the masses. These dudes are serious. Former and current members of bands such as: Annihilation Time, Witch, Saviours, and CharMan, with the combined experience points of over half a century of rocking, you knows these dudes aren’t some flash in the pan, pussy-shit fad band. This is the heavy shit, start saving for rehab, loser.”

AQUA NEBULA OSCILLATOR

“AQUA NEBULA OSCILLATOR — formed in 2000 by David Sphaèr’os — creates utterly unique and fantastically tripped out occult psych rock inspired by parallel dimensions, voodoo, ethnic trance, horror and cult movies (from the 1920’s to the 60’s), painters like Hieronymus Bosch and Salvador Dali, dark underground literature H. P. Lovecraft, Isidore Ducasse, Antonin Artaud, aliens and UFOs! A modern mix of Krautrock / motorik with Hawkwind-style psychedelia, Hendrix-styled, ultra tripped out guitar action and an apocalyptic, Raw Power energy, AQUA NEBULA OSCILLATOR’s mind-burning, dark and dirty “chaos-sound” is a cauldron full of seething, primitive acid garage punk. ANO looks and sounds like it was buried in a tomb in the late 60’s / 70’s and has just been dug up and the band’s new album (and Tee Pee Records debut), “Third” is both totally fantastic, utterly underground and peculiarly timeless! AQUA NEBULA OSCILLATOR whips up storms of scorching guitar and hypnotic bass grooves over drums that are pounded into submission. Pure punkadelic!!”

IN ZAIRE

in zaire promo

“At first it may seem like a sonic foray into well known territory: a guitar, drums and bass driven ride into psychedelic landscapes – colorful and mind-expanding. And if you’re looking for some lysergic adventures this is your ticket! But even though “White Sun Black Sun” is obviously and deeply rooted in the ongoing history of electrified rock-n-roll-to-blow-your-head-off (i.e. from Ash Ra Tempel and Hawkwind to Up-Tight) IN ZAIRE reach way beyond this admirable approach and successfully aim for more. The music’s taking cues from electric Blues, the aforementioned LSD-drenched Psychedelia, high-octane Japrock and edgy Post-Punk – there’s even some Funk thrown in for good measurement. So, turn it on and tune in and find yourself immersed in a universe of sound that consists of bizarre tones and beautiful noises circling around like planets – each one unique, different and magnificent.”

LA OTRACINA

“LA OTRACINA is the New Wave of Psychedelic Heavy Metal, a contemporary musical vision exploding with classic influences and mind-warping sonic fusions! Their sound is a dense and majestic universe where the epic glory of 70’s proto-metal and hard-rock dance with the graceful complexity of cosmic progressive rock and the hallucinogenic mystery of heavy psychedelia, and all the while free-form improvisational interludes give way to poly-rhythmic thrash assaults and spiraling jazz-rock freakouts! Formed in Brooklyn, NY in 2003 by drummer/vocalist Adam Kriney and guitarist Joshua Anzano (Titan, Children), LA OTRACINA was always hell-bent on creating highly visionary music that collided sonic ideas from the outer reaches of heavy and weird. Since that time the group has amassed a huge discography on labels including Holy Mountain (OM, Lesbian, Six Organs Of Admittance, Mammatus), Foxy Digitalis, and Kriney’s own Colour Sounds Recordings. As a live entity, they have embarked on endless US tours and one Italian tour, in addition to countless shows in their hometown. Their tireless work ethic and far-reaching musical abilities have earned them a devoted cult following in the underground psychedelic/heavy music world, and their live shows leave fans screaming and fist-pumping in ecstatic awe!”

WITCH

“The group WITCH was born from a marriage of apparently contradictory influences. J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. renown and his long time friend Dave Sweetapple were interested in forming a hard rock band. They found willing and able conspirators in Kyle Thomas and Asa Irons, members of New England avant-folk outfit Feathers. On their eponymous debut album, this line-up mounts a mighty sonic tumult that harkens back to classic heavy metal sound of early 70’s outfits while still sounding modern in it’s assault (and without falling into the ubiquitous “Stoner Rock” pigeonhole). The eponymous debut album from WITCH is scheduled for release on Tee Pee Records March 7th, 2006.

In WITCH, Mascis returns to his first love, drums, playing with an unbridled passion that recalls his work with Deep Wound, his early 80’s hardcore band. Meanwhile, Kyle sings and writes the group’s supernatural-oriented lyrics, exploring the juxtapositions between age and youth, the paradox of meeting yourself, and the dilemma of falling asleep on a mountaintop and waking up a hundred years year. Asa weaves a dense texture of rhythm and lead guitar lines that ebb and flow over the basic monolithic, trundling riff-rock song structure. Dave adds additional weight to WITCH’s sound with massive, crunching bass lines, returning this his instrument of choice when he played in Newfoundland punk bands back in the early 80s.

WITCH headed into the studio and recorded their debut album for Tee Pee Records with engineer John Agnello, immediately following an extensive Dinosaur Jr. reunion tour this past Summer. Agnello had already recorded Dinosaur Jr., J Mascis + The Fog, Early Man, Son Volt and Screaming Trees to name a few.”

DZJENGHIS KHAN

“DZJENGHIS KHAN… the very name strikes fear in even the most crude heathen. The earth shakes as his army mercilessly slaughters and pillages, leaving only pyramids of decapitated skulls in his wake. Then why, one might ask, would anyone in their right mind want to be associated with, not to mention name thier group after, such a ruthless tyrant? Well… I’ll tell ya. ‘Cause we’re crazy!!! Khan had long hair, we got long hair. Khan loved eating meat and bangin’ chicks and so do we!!! If DZJENGHIS KHAN had a hard ‘n’ heavy rock ‘n’ roll band it would pretty much sound like us and he knows it! His ghost came to us while peaking on LSD and granted us his blessing, commanding us to return to Europe and take over the conquering where he left off.”

TITAN

Titan-Press-photo

“Brooklyn’s TITAN specialize in crafting epic rock jams; smokey, sprawling stretches of sweet riffs, swirling synths, and all the right kinds of rock bombast. They have an instinctual grasp on tension and release, with each song building to several emotional crescendos before ebbing, only to repeat in the most compelling of ways. Sweet Dreams, and especially the track “Wooded Altar Beyond The Wander”, prove that TITAN is one of America’s finest rock exports.”

OVER-GAIN OPTIMAL DEATH

OGOD 2012

“OVER-GAIN OPTIMAL DEATH, or OGOD, are a heavy psych power trio from Pasadena, California. Playing blown-out overgaining speed-freak-outs, their sound is enveloped in a total nihilist fuzz atmosphere, mating intoxicating pulsing repetition with hyperactive improvisations and out of body guitar solos. Resurrecting US 60’s punk and acid-riffage from the likes of Blue Cheer, The Stooges, MC5 and live Hendrix Experience, OGOD also draws greatly on the in-the-red sound aesthetic and high energy of the Japanese Speed Freak trios of the 80’s/90’s; High Rise, Mainliner, and Musica Transonic. OGOD’s psych interpretation brings light to the other side of the Psychedelic Trip, not that of peace and love, but the jaw grinding speedy anxiety of the illumination of immortal power. Having completed 3 albums, live and studio collaborations with Shazzula (Aqua Nebula Oscillator), and a North American tour with Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O. in 2010, OGOD are quickly rising as one of the heaviest psych bands of the US.”
